In August 2014, the Norwegian-Russian Chamber of Commerce has signed a 3 years Program Agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway. One of the central projects within this agreement is Tourism Development Norway – Arkhangelsk & Murmansk regions. The project aims to strengthen commercial relations within tourism and related travel industry – like leisure adventures in the immediate border area between Norway and Russia.
Within the framework of the project, NRCC has organised study trip for Russian tour operators to Northern Norway and Oslo. During this promotion trip participants were introduced to some of the most beautiful places in Northern Norway. The trips started in Kirkenes and finished in Oslo. In the trip participated representatives from 9 biggest tour companies in Russia from Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and Nenets areas.

Northern Norway has a good market position for Russian travellers, and has a good potential to attract more foreign tourists. Winter activities, like Northern Lights safaris and dog sledding and other nature-based activities in Northern Norway have become increasingly popular among Russian tourists.

The aim of the trip was to introduce the biggest attractions in the Northern part of Norway to tour operators, who will create tour packages for various adventures and events, winter sports and will take part in product development at selected destinations. Enhanced knowledge about Russian customers among Norwegian service providers should lead to improved products and travel packages. Cross border travel packages can be developed as well, with Kirkenes and the Pechenga Municipality as target areas.
